Itinerary
Day 1 :
Drive to Debre Damo
Morning:
• 7:00AM : Book your tour with Magic Ethiopia tours earlier and we will organise your everything needed for your day tour package. The drive to Debre Damo is approximately 76 kilometers (47 miles) and takes around 3 hours on recently restored roads. Enjoy the scenic Tigray mountain views along the way.
• 10:00 AM: Arrive at the foothills of Debre Damo. Here, you'll meet your guide – a local monk who will lead you on the ascent to the monastery.
Challenge Time:
• 10:15 AM: The unique part of the journey begins! The ascent to the monastery is via a 15-meter (50-foot) hand-woven leather rope known as the "Jende." Be prepared for a physically demanding climb. The monks will assist you with safety measures.
Afternoon:
• 11:00 AM (approx): Reach the top of the plateau and explore the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Take a moment to appreciate the historical significance of this isolated monastery.
• 11:30 AM: Visit the Church of Abune Aregawi, believed to be the oldest existing intact church in Ethiopia, dating back to the 6th century. Admire the architectural style and learn about the history of the Nine Saints who brought Christianity to the region.
• 12:30 PM: Enjoy a packed lunch you brought with you on the plateau, taking in the scenery and serenity of the location.
• 1:30 PM: Descend the cliff face using the leather rope, again with the help of the monks.
• 2:30 PM: Arrive back at the starting point and begin your return journey to Axum.
• 5:00 PM: Arrive back in Axum, reflecting on your unique experience at Debre Damo Monastery.
Important Notes:
• Due to the physical challenge of the climb, this trip is not recommended for those with limited mobility or fear of heights.
• Women are not permitted to enter the monastery grounds.
• Dress modestly, with long pants and shirts covering shoulders and knees, out of respect for the religious significance of the site.
• Bring comfortable shoes suitable for hiking and climbing.
• Don't forget to pack water, sunscreen, and a hat for sun protection.
