Itinerary
The journey begins with a drive from Mekelle to Wukro, where we visit the historic Wukro Cherkos Church, one of Tigray’s famous rock-hewn churches. From here, we start an exhilarating hike through breathtaking mountains, passing through picturesque landscapes and natural wonders unique to the region. As we trek towards Abraha We Atsbeha, the stunning scenery unfolds with dramatic rock formations and sweeping valleys. In the late afternoon, we explore the magnificent Abraha We Atsbeha Church, a centuries-old masterpiece carved into the rock. The day ends with a peaceful overnight camping experience, surrounded by the serene beauty of Tigray’s highlands.

After breakfast, we set off on a 9 km trek through the stunning landscapes of Tigray, passing through rugged mountains and therapeutic highland scenery. Along the way, we visit Yohannes Maekodi Church, a hidden rock-hewn gem with fascinating history and architecture. From here, we descend into a lush green valley, where our campsite awaits, offering a peaceful overnight stay surrounded by nature’s beauty.

The journey continues with a scenic hike to Debre Tsion Church, a breathtaking rock-hewn church built high on a hill, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. After exploring this ancient site, we trek deeper into the Gheralta Mountains, where rugged cliffs, expansive plateaus, and picturesque valleys create an awe-inspiring backdrop. The trail leads us through some of Tigray’s most stunning scenery, making every step a memorable experience. As we make our way to Abune Gebremeskel built on top the gheralta hill then continue to Mariam Papasity , the peaceful surroundings provide the perfect setting for an unforgettable night.
Camping beneath the star-filled sky, we immerse ourselves in the tranquility of the highlands, surrounded by the raw beauty of Ethiopia’s most scenic trekking destination.
After breakfast, we will visit Mariam Papasity Church, a hidden treasure among Tigray’s rock-hewn churches, known for its intricate carvings and deep religious significance. From there, we begin a three-hour trek through the breathtaking landscapes of the Gheralta mountains, making our way to the base of Mariam Korkor, one of the most iconic rock-hewn churches in Tigray. Along the way, we will experience stunning panoramic views of the rugged mountain chain, walk through dramatic cliffs, and witness the rich cultural heritage of the local communities. Upon reaching our campsite, the view opens up to a vast and spectacular landscape, offering a perfect vantage point to admire the Gheralta mountain range.

Whether you come for the history, the landscapes, or the unique local traditions, this journey through Tigray’s highlands is an experience not to be missed.
After breakfast, we begin a challenging yet rewarding descent towards Abune Yemata Guh, a trek that takes about two and a half hours through rugged terrain. Upon reaching the base, we set up camp before embarking on the thrilling climb to the church itself. Carved into a sheer cliff, Abune Yemata Guh is famous for its marvelous cave architecture, ancient religious paintings, and breathtaking panoramic views. After exploring this extraordinary site, we return to our camp for lunch and some well-earned rest. In the afternoon, we continue our journey 5 km north of Hawzen to visit Georgis Maikado, an ancient rock-hewn church dating back to the 4th century A.D..
As the day comes to a close, we return to Abune Yemata’s campsite, where we spend our final night under the stars, reflecting on an unforgettable trekking adventure through Tigray’s most stunning landscapes. Camp at foot of Abune Yemata
After a relaxed morning, we begin our 115 km drive back to Mekelle, making a stop to explore two remarkable churches from the Teka Tesfay cluster—Michael Milhayzengi and Medhane Alem Adikosho. We hike 2 and half hour to these hidden rock-hewn treasures, offering a final glimpse of Tigray’s spiritual heritage and breathtaking landscapes. Back on the road, we visit Al-Nejashi Mosque, Ethiopia’s oldest mosque, built in the 6th century A.D., showcasing the country’s deep historical and religious diversity.
We stop in Wukro for lunch before heading to Mekelle Airport for an afternoon flight to Addis Ababa, marking the end of an unforgettable trekking and cultural adventure in Tigray.
