Itinerary
The journey begins with a drive from Mekelle to Wukro, where we visit the historic Abrha we Atsibha Church, one of Tigray’s famous rock-hewn churches. From here, we start an exhilarating hike through breathtaking mountains, passing through picturesque landscapes and natural wonders unique to the region.
We set off on a 4 hours trek through the stunning landscapes of Tigray, passing through rugged mountains and therapeutic highland scenery. Along the way, we visit Yohannes Maikudi Church, a hidden rock-hewn gem with fascinating history and architecture. we descend an hour walk into a lush green valley, where our campsite awaits, offering a peaceful overnight stay surrounded by nature’s beauty.
Camping at foot of Debretsion
The journey continues with a scenic hike to Debre Tsion Church 2 hours trek, a breathtaking rock-hewn church built high on a hill, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.
After exploring this ancient site, we trek deeper into the Gheralta Mountains, where rugged cliffs, expansive plateaus, and picturesque valleys create an awe-inspiring backdrop. The trail leads us through some of Tigray’s most stunning scenery, making every step a memorable experience. As we make our way to Abune Gebremeskel built on top the gheralta hill then continue to Mariam Papasity 4 hours trek, the peaceful surroundings provide the perfect setting for an unforgettable night. Camping beneath the star-filled sky, we immerse ourselves in the tranquility of the highlands, surrounded by the raw beauty of Ethiopia’s most scenic trekking destination.
Camping at Mariam Papasit
Embark on a 4-5 hour trek through the breathtaking Gheralta landscape, passing traditional Tigrayan houses and enjoying the raw beauty of northern Ethiopia. The hike ascends to Mariam Korkor, perched at an altitude of over 2,000 meters, offering a panoramic view of the Gheralta mountains. Upon arrival, witness a stunning sunset casting golden hues over the rugged cliffs and valleys. Spend the night atop the hill, surrounded by serenity, history, and one of Tigray’s most spectacular landscapes.
Camping at Korkor church
Rise early at 6:00 AM to witness the breathtaking sunrise from the top of Mariam Korkor, soaking in the stunning panoramic views of the Gheralta mountains. After enjoying the scenery, descend to the campsite for a hearty breakfast before exploring the historic Mariam Korkor and Daniel Korkor churches, known for their rich history and intricate artwork.
Next, embark on a challenging yet rewarding 2.5-hour trek toward Abune Yemata Guh, navigating rugged terrain and a thrilling climb to reach this awe-inspiring rock-hewn church. Carved into a sheer cliff, Abune Yemata Guh is renowned for its ancient cave architecture, magnificent religious paintings, and jaw-dropping panoramic views. After a well-deserved lunch, drive back to Mekelle for an overnight stay or continue your journey back to Addis Ababa.
